Wild Life means a little yellow box. The Wisconsin- Bournemouth- São Paulo Connection.

So it means all started because I friend of mine sent a message from Wisconsin telling me about a deer who had died hit by a car in front of her house, the carcass was right on her front lawn and the county for weeks didn't send anyone to take it from there.
Telling me this novel about how to make the county take a dead deer carcass from your lawn we talked a lot about the deer situation on the green state of Wisconsin. Go Packs !!!!!
It got in my mind and I pretty much had to start to paint , for some reason painting is a tool I use to talk to myself.
All the rest you saw on the earlier posts, for one month or more I have painted using the deer theme and writing about this particular experience : deer, painting, my life's story.
It is funny, up there in the frozen Wisconsin comes news which touch me deeper than the facts surrounding my life here, in the hot tropics. And talking about tropics, I have tried to paint for four days... It is too hot to make any move, the canvasses has been prepared and all is in my mind, but when I get into my studio... ohh noooo... I only feel like to take an uber cold tea or fresh fruit juice. I am not complaining , it must to me an unconscious excuse to postpone the battle that is the act of painting for me . Ahhhhh... the frozen lands up north seem to be so tempting now.
Sometimes is the extremely opposite that is able to show the truth of us and open hidden understandings.  God bless the extremely opposite of our particular and earthly nature.

But the story doesn't end here. This friend of mine, Sandy, insisted a couple of times " Caio, here we don't say Stag, we say Buck".
Yes, it is right and I intend to make a " Buck" painting one day, very soon. I want very much to do it as still have to dive deeper into this feeling.
But let me tell the Stag Story : As you know English isn't my first or not even second language. Is it the third ? There was me, 2007, after have lived in London I started to travel by Great Britain till a girl invite me to live with her and her girl friend at her apartment in a lovely south shore little town named Bournemouth. I even got a two weeks job there in one of the dozens night clubs. The most expensive one named 2020, I got the black t-shirts and still wear it today, hahaha.
One day coming back from the beach I had to pass by the down town as it was the way to the apartment I was staying as guest when I looked to the floor and found an used little box of matches which you see the pictures on this post.
I read "stag", well my English skills are only  good for surviving and at the time I decided to read all Tolkien's work, starting by Silmarillion which I was reading exactly at the time, my idea was if my English sucks I will start to read this language by what everybody says that is very hard, hahahah, it didn't help me at all, as you can see .
But  "stag", what is this?  Arriving at the apartment I took a dictionary and saw the meaning. That is the reason I chose to use this world.
Remember... here in Sao Paulo we have absolute anything related with the deer culture. It is completely an alien and exotic concept for the local life style. So if I had the necessity to paint because of this subject and the stories told me from North, I would use the word I was familiar with as my only personal experiences with deer are from Europe and England. Even the paintings I made in 2008 and 2009 portraiting deers are from models I saw and photographed there in the old land.
About this old box of matches, I took it with me all the way, it became my bookmark till today, started marking the pages of Silmarillion and all the books I have read since then. Yes, I have it by my side now and took these pictures a couple of days ago as I intended to post about, it would be hanged and glued on the painting I wrote the word Stag... but I decided to keep as a bookmark.
It is pretty, isn't it?

Painting, Dream, Free, Deer, Blood, Jesus, Nazis, Nephilim, Experiences, German, Brazilian, English. It is getting clear now.

Yesterday I was talking to my dear friend “golden angel” and all of sudden mylast paintings have been much clear to me, the meanings and the facts surrounding them.
Below is the explanation I gave to her about what have happened these days in my studio and explanation about the last 4  or 5 paintings I’ve made:
—————————————————-
I spent the entire morning in the studio burning my brain to figure out a way to compose what I have in mind. I think I got.
One or two nights ago I had many dreams, weird ones. I woke up the whole night because of them… not nightmares, only weird. In the morning I woke up and started to write a dialog. I want to write this dialog on the canvas after to finish the painting. It is weird and quite evil but has a good end. It is about Jesus, Nazis, the Nephilims (Giants) of the book of Genesis, genetic experiences, sex, blood lines, South America, but all in very few lines and I don’t think people will notice it all. But will all be there very clear. I can’t explain. The title of the work will be Stag, following the works I am doing where I write words deer related….. venison, fawn, doe and now stag. I see this dialog as a way to show I got rid of all the past and devils haunting my life.

- venison was about flesh and the fact I am eating meat now.
- fawn, like a rebirth, a new hope and life.
- Doe was about fatality of life.
- Stag will be about blood. The blood of Jesus, the blood lines described in the Bible form Adan to Jesus and the nephilims' decendency, and the nazis experiment and ideals about a perfect bood line... blood in general, the animal blood in us and the importance it has had during all the History incluring to God.

———————below is the dialog I intend to work on my next painting —————————————————————–
Stag  - A South American dialogue between a Traditional Nazi ( Joseph Mengele’s assistant’s granddaughter ) and a Reborn Fundamentalist Christian painter.
- Penis, neck and chest used to bleed like a hunted stag.
- It has been a trophy, Mein Lieber.
- Eu, Ich.. I mean, I am not.
- Isn’t you who decidesss.
- Warum werent sie verhaftet, wenn in diesem Teil der Welt angekommen? Desse lado do mundo ?
- Speak only the devil’s language which came from North.
- Eu don’t know it very well…prefiro na lingua que eu penso.
- Isn’t you who choosesss. But for your comfort, me neither.
- Why weren’t they arrested when arrived to this side of the world?
- Their services and knowledge seemed to please and satisfy all parts involved here.
- Does my blood belong to their blood line?
- Nein, you came from their victims.
- Am I one of their experiments?
- Sie sind nicht.
- Because I had one very strong genetic characteristic of their experiments.
- If you say so… let’s call it a coincidence.
- Coincidence isn’t a very scientific or spiritual term, is it? And stop to play with your thighs in front of me.
- I know your weakness.
- You are not the Frau I am supposed to take.
- Oh, I am sorry. Are you supposed to take only one now? We both know you don’t like this rule, Stag.
- When Jesus called I answered. Now I am washed in His blood. They can’t touch me anymore.
- Blood blood blood. It is all about blood….. and blood lines.
- Not even you are able to touch me. Stop to hunt. Nobody can.
- It is all about blood line. Has been since from the very beginning, from Adam.
- I don’t care. I am free. Eu sou livre.
- Stag.
- He made me much more than this. Essa foi nossa ultima conversa e contato. Eu te lanço no abismo, Nephilim, junto com sua suastica. ( That was our last conversation and contact. I throw you into the abyss, Nephilim*, along with your swastika ).
*The Nephilim were the offspring of the “sons of God” ( fallen Angels ) and the “daughters of men” according to Genesis 6:4, a new breed not approved by God.

I confess I've been a bit satisfied

I confess I’ve been a bit satisfied lately with my work ( of painting ).

I believe that I have condensed elements into a more focused way of expression.

The intention towards the works never was to represent anything, but to express the feelings generated during the process of the individual having to deal with itself.

I try to avoid the description of ideas, facts and concepts, what is hard to do when it is about figurative painting, and more, representational art….. as I don’t intend to represent anything, only to use the external light reflected by skin and its volumes on my own face as model for painting.

The real intention behind the works is producing expression by itself. Expression of individual issues behind the struggle for self development and self improvement, but making the artwork to become as independent as possible from the author on its feelings, life and destiny.

I always believed that pictorial values by its plots would be enough for all my needs. But during the whole year of 2011 I focused on composition of the image as a way to increase the conversation among an intention of anti-space, pictorial values, and the viewer.

The intention of denying the external space where the main figure is the only subject is still there and got a new and deeper level of intensity now. It opened the possibility to explore with more efficiency internal spaces found into the individual nature and its process self-discovering and fighting to become reformed, remodeled. Even so one of my earlier concerns was the doubt if exploring more internal spaces the image would naturally spread all over and lose its focus into itself. But I am glad to report that by a not so big effort it didn’t happen, as a matter of fact was the opposite, I have never been able to develop an image into itself as I’ve done lately.

I still have some issues to solve that haven’t made me totally satisfied and again for being able to reach what I need I will have to turn my attention to the improvement of the pictorial values always having in mind I can not lose the achievements obtained my the improvement of the composition.

The problem of the composition is creativity. I always saw creativity as an obstacle and diversion for the purest form of self expression. As I said , pictorial values should be able to deal with all my needs of expression and make the work be able to live by itself. But I confess the creativity demanded by the efforts for composing an image has given me a bigger offer for exploring internal territories and has made easier to deal with the image, maybe creativity is an escape from my main target. I don’t know if its is a phase or if it is another characteristic of my work’s nature that is coming to stay definitely. I say definitely because these characteristics aren’t new, you can observe then on the whole trajectory of my work with more emphasis on the years of 2001 and 2002. But I believe that on all the periods it has appeared in a more or less obvious way.

So in fact I didn’t produce anything really new on 2011, only improved or got more aware of characteristics I have denied for years or simply didn’t feel the necessity to work so hard on it giving the attention I think now it deserves.

Why Am I writting this? I had nothing better to do, was looking to the watch all the time, now it is 21:26 , time to leave.

be pathetic was the price for authenticity ( the kids are wrong ) - punk , illustrations , early influences , geting old , - by Caio Fernandes 2010

IF YOU WANT TO SEE THIS POST WITH IMAGES VISIT MEIN WELT

don't even bother to read this . even because it is very embassing to me . but i must to post anyway . i must to , soon or later , be fair with my early influences that works on me still today , every single day , good or bad , made me be what i am .
there was me in a strange country in 2007 eating my beakfast , brown bread with sauerkraut with brown bread and more sauerkraut , listening the Jon Specer Blues Explosion's album i got fron a nice girl that studied cinema , when i see by the side of the cd, pen , pencil and paper .
with one hand holding the bread and other drawing i did this little scketch . i thought i had put this into the trash , but when i arrived here in Sao Paulo was among my stuff deep in my backpack .
ok , it isn't a good drawing even more when you compare with the photo . but what made me wonder is that in my entire life this was just the second time i drawed observing an albums cover . the first time was just in 2005 when i did a self portrait and painted the "Die Die my Darling - Misfits , by the side of it .
curious considering that my early influences were exactaly the cover of albuns i used to listen and the Chiclete com Banana magazine ( buble gum with banana ) ...
in 1986 my country was coming out fron a heavy dictatorship , and all intelecuals ( in Brasil you're just considered intelectual if you have "left" ideals , if not , you're considered idiot ) , artists , musicians , news papers .... were screaming socialist speechs and " the truth of the poors "by a very twisted and disgusting idea of democracy that is as elitist today as the dictatorship . it sucked so much , was the most obvious boring moment a nation could experiment .
1986 there was me , 11 years old walking down the street having 10 erections a day , listening Ramones when i saw the cover of the first number of a magazine with a illustration of Duck Donald in a punk look and doing drugs saying " pato que pariu " in a horrible translation it is like " duck you " a pun for fuck you .
Chiclete com Banana was the most anarquist and self destructive magazine of the world ever , it was about Angeli 's cartoons , acid humor ant-politic but against everything . the perfection .
i read this magazine fron 11 to 18 years old , when the it stoped to be published ...
the biggest influence it had on my life wans't about atittude or humor , i would get this anyway , but very early Angeli made me believe how important was to develop your own style ( here i posted a cover of the magazine with Angeli's self portrait ) .
in a world where all the kids used to listen virtuous guitar players of metal and blues , i was listening punk rock , skinhead OI , and the indie rock of that time , musicians that barely knew how to hold a guitar , but played this with more feeling than the genious that played one thousand of notes per second . i was a fan of a cartunist that had a vagabound drawing but was able to make it happens and was impossible to do not recognise his style .
i hated mtv because my favorite bands didn't even have video clips , so i used to spend hours in my bed just looking to the cover of the albuns and listening it . i had my particular genious-heros , as Raymond Pettibon , even today when someone asks me to make a list of my biggest influences , among Rembrandt , Lucien Freud , Giacometti , Frans Halls , Richard Serra , Eduard Much , Velasquez , Beuys , ..... isn't rare to include Raymond Petibon , he made several covers for SST bands as Minutemen and Black Flag , i am not sure about gossips , but i think he was the brother of the Black Flag's leader ... i had it all , and i thought he was the best in the world ever !! hahah!!
for many years i just had 2 t-shirts , one white of the Toy Dolls ( i am a toy doll , do you remember this post about Michelangelo and the Dutch painters of the 17th centure ? ) and one black of "Let's Start a War " the Exploited classic . this Exploited cover was one of the biggest influences about painting in my life , observing and living with it for years , i learned lots of things about light , space .... and i believe that today isn't so hard to look at this cover and understand how it gets into my work .
Ramones : for my entire life i have listened everyday , yes , even today . everything about Ramones is perfect , even the covers of the albuns , and many years ago i made a painting using the rest of paint fron other work , the name of it is Sabado ( saturday ) , i intended to use a Ramone character as a self reference in a Saturday night , alone and miserable , while the rest of the city was having fun , yes , i don't like this painting , but i keep it . don't know why , and the Ramone character seens more like a mexican guy asking for job than a punk rocker ... maybe this is the reason i still keep , makes me laugh .
one cover that changed my life for ever was the Sonic Youth's : Sister . i was 13 years old when i got this album . and after hours listening and looking to this cover i got more and more intrigued about the girl on it . who was she ? why is she there , i mean , this cover had lots of good images , but all stoped to exist when i looked to this girl's portrait . she wasn't even pretty , but strong , definitive .
one day on a end of year party of my father's company , a guy asked me to go to his car pick up something , when i got there i found a Richard Avedon's book with the title : In the American West . and guess who was staring at me ? the Sonic Youth's girl . " what the hell is she doing here on this car , what book is this ?" i started to "discover" the book page by page ... and page by page i got fascinated by it . the images were so strong , raw , sofisticated , direct , intriguing , it was more punk than all the punk moviment's images . sundely the photo of the girl on Sonic Youth's album seemed to be so silly and boring with all those colorful interventions , so weak comparing with the original . i could write for hours about this . it definetly changed my life .
other thing it made me remember is that today i paint as i wished almost 10 years ago , 10 years ago i painted as i wished 20 years ago ..... i am living as i had imagined when i was a kid , this pathetic life i have today was my dream when i was 11 years old . if i traveled in time and appeared to myself with 11 showing my work and telling a couple of hundreds of storys , the little me would say : oh my God , i am my hero !! kids are stupidy . even because after the world have turned thousands of times i am pretty much the same . at that time i used to listen Ramones everyday and spanking a monkey trying imagine how is a real experience with a real woman .... now i listen Ramones everyday and spank a monkey trying to remember how was a real experience with a real woman .... next reecarnation , when i get teenager , i am going to try to imagine myself milionary with lots of biggboobed blodes jumping around me .
the monastic life of a painter .
in the future i am thinking about to make posts about my influences , i decided to start by the very beguining . this one .
i forgot to say one thing : when i get milionarie i am going to buid a chapel for The Ramones !!

artbook , art market and curatory. THE PICTORIAL CONSEQUENCE.

iF YOU WANT TO SEE THIS POST WITH IMAGES AND ALL THE LINKS VISIT MEIN WELT

acrylic on canvas by Caio Fernandes 2010 - Elizabeth Avedon about THE PICTORIAL CONSEQUENCE - art books, curatory and art market .
I spent days looking to the blank canvasses and breathing the image of my head .
Thank You God for giving me a work that points to a especific direction that i still can't see wich is but i am going to follow your lead anyway .
I feel that there is something to dig and dive deeper and i am going to do it .
i loved . i am really happy about this work today .
A post about THE PICTORIAL CONSEQUENCE
on ELIZABETH AVEDON's blog this Saturday , made me think about the importance of the art books in my life . As now i am doing this series of posts every week about my influences .
Without artbooks i would never have not even 10% of the idea about painting i had when i started to work with it ( maybe i would never feel like to be an artist without then ) . They formed my eyes , they inspired me . I am ashamed to say , but this is true , i learned to paint observing books of another artists . Because here in Sao Paulo we don't have great collections of art , even less opened for the public . We have here 1 Rembrandt ( that i believe it is fake ) , 2 Cezanes , 4 or 5 Renoirs . Very few works fron few artists , and not good examples of their production .
Sometimes in the past we had here an exhibition of Monet , other of Salvador Dali , other of Robert Rauschenberg , Anselm Kiefer , Beuys ... there are the Biennales and it is good ... ( but with Bienal you must to have lucky because of the Brasilian madness . Last Biennal here in Sao Paulo was empty , no artworks , the curators decided to take the artists out of the process and make their life easier . It was a HUGE conceptual exhibition . no art . as has been the tendency in Sao Paulo's "art market" for the last 10 years ) .
So the art books are fundamental in my life , hein ? YES .
First time i went to Europe i was a painter and artist here alread for almost 7 years with lots of exhibitions and local awards in my curriculum . At the museuns there i saw bush strokes i didn't know that existed . I got amaized with the too small or too large size of some works i knew by books . I got fascinated by the fact that the great masters ARE great masters , but there are hundreds of great painters i had never saw in any book .
It was a lesson for me to be humble about my work . I used to compared my works with the brazilian artists of all times , i thought i was a real genious , hahah! ... there ... i saw how much i have to learn . I saw that i didn't even began even having a very authentic work alread that didn't look like nothing being produced today or in the past .
But art books are the still the fundamental stone of my life and production .

There are 3 kinds of art books :
The one where some publisher takes 120 pictures of some artist , like Degas for instance , organize in 200 pages and publish it . It is as a catalog of the artists works . The book has no personality , is very ilustrative , but very useful for people like me that have no money but must to see as much as possible .
The second kind is that huge one , shining , with ultra expensive paper , photos as large as possible . Very pretencious and beutiful . But at the end , when you start to have a relantionship with it , you realise you can't go deeper , that this is just a coffee table's wonderful ornament . Even so i like those books , who doesn't ?
The tird kind of book is the ideal . Is when the art book is a piece of art by it self . Complete . When the last page closes a perfect circle with the first one . There is no space for mistakes . The photos in it develop into your eyes a relation of continuity and commitment . You're able to feel every single work of the artist there represented as an exclusive individuos , but you feel the whole experience as well . All the artist's proposal together , filling your eyes , brain and chest . Not necessarily in a literary way .
Books like that are very rare , but exist .
Elizabeth Avedon's design is about that , this is the reason i am talking about that .

What makes me think about the real importance of a book designer or a curator in an artist 's carrier .
I gave here on this post 2 examples of profissionals that have an interference on the way the artist exhibit his work to the public . 2 extremes .
First . The tipical curator of the province , as happens here in Sao Paulo , that has a relation of imposition of his will and view of art upon the artist's production , very similar the relation of lord-slave , doesn't giving space for the artist to express himself and sufocating his production till arrive to extreme points , as happened with me , that years ago decided to do not produce anymore and even less to exhibit my work . I am not the only one that gave up here . Even so : I AM BACK , BABY , face it !! Diferent of lots of young artists that aren't producing any more even having talent , totaly afraid of this kind of imposition by those "profissionals" that dominate the theoretical Sao Paulo's art market . This thing got to the ridiculous extreme of , as i told , they prefered to make an Internacional Bienal of Sao Paulo , without any artists , just then , the curators that know more about art than the artists ( booohh ) .
In the other hand you have the profissional that as a book designer or curator understand the proposal of the artist and brings this up with quality , generosity , but most important : in a objetive way . The artist woudn't be able to do this because the work is too personal for him ( i had in some exhibitions problems to choose what to show ) . He has emotinal relation with it , he , sometimes , can't "deliver" this to the public in a clear way . He needs a person he can trust . Someone that can see what his is really doing , orgnise and exhibit .
Does this profissional really exist ? Well , i have never met one right in front of me in flesh and bood . But i do believe in it , as i have seem their results .
Do you want some prove that this kind of profissional atittude exists ? see MY BROTHER'S WAR .

Okay , as i am writing a lot about delicated subjects and giving my most personal opinion about , let me spit what has been stoked in my throat about curatory and profissionals that exerce influence over the public .
Now we have gallerys closing door and gallerists puting the blame of the crises on the global economy . It is fair , big part of the art market crises comes fron the economic crises .
But there is another factor that anybody talks about , not even "the internet voices " , the independent blogs about contemporary art , that has as proposal to talk about what "really is happening" in the contemporary art , but as a matter of fact just talk about what happens in the main institutions and gallerys , complaining , or kissing ass of their friends .
At the last 3 years internet has made a revolution about the way to see art and discover new artists around the world . Every day i discover new good artists on internet ( flickr , blogspot , wordpress , tumblr , moblog ....) and not rare , i discover exellent artists that are producing incredible works NOW , at this exact moment . They aren't being exhibited in any institution . They aren't being represented by any important Gallery . Any "ultra influent" curator is asking then to any exhibition or writing about then .
Well ... do the gallerists think what ? That the art collectors are blind ? That they are totaly dumb ?
Camon !
Try to imagine the head of a guy that has for the last 15 , 20 year totaly trusted in gallerists , curators , art critics ... and now , on his laptop , he finds blogs and web sites of artists that are exelent in all the medias and areas , but are totaly out of the market . Soon or later he is going to start to think :
"Wait a minute . Why did i buy that artwork of that artist by a small fortune if here i see on this website an artist that has the same years of carrier than him , but a much better work , and in a price 10 times cheaper ? Just because some critic wrote about it on that magazine ? just because the gallerist was very nice with me and conviced me very well ? just because that curator wrote about him a very complex text and called him for some exhibition in a art institution ? What is happening ? "
"Did everyone lie to me ? Did they exhibit art thinking only and exclusively about their personal interests and not about real quality ? "
So how can this collector go back to the gallery he used to and see it with the same eyes ? Shake hands of the gallerist with the same trust ? Read that critic with the same interest ? Visit the exhibition of that curator with the same exitement ?
I believe that the art market as it is , and has been , will never loses all its power , but some atittudes must to change forced by internet .
For example :
Soon or later , isn't the profissional with the best contacts that will have more credibility , but the one that presents to the public what is REALLY happening , even because it is getting harder to hide the real talents of this world .
Other thing is the dictatorial atitude about "what is in , what is out " in the market's tendences . The collector will more and more , buy what he wants and likes , not what someone tells him to buy . Because if he doesn't find what he likes at the gallery , he finds on internet and buy fron the artist .
Tendences will always exist and dominate part of the market , but with much less power .
Most part of the contemporary art blogs , web sites , magazines and institutions ... will have to start to really talk about what is happening and find the new artists presenting then with justice , because this vehicles i see today has no credibility to talk about anything anymore . They are just a pretencious joke and waist of time made exclusively for the exaltention of personal contacts .
Should i start my own blog about contemporary art ? Sadly i have no time for this . And sincerely , no interest too .

hey Caio!! good !! here you are digging your grave with your briliant personal opinion !! clap clap clap !!

Anyway ... Thank you again Elizabeth Avedon . Just the extremely rare people , like you , are able to make life bearable for people like me .
